Stress is one of the biggest health concerns in the world. It's been connected to everything from seizures and high blood pressure, to depression and the flu. Many people now work longer hours, and the pressure of an increasingly demanding work culture is arguably the biggest and most pressing challenge to the mental health of people throughout the globe.

Managing the work-life balance can be a struggle, especially if you have other family commitments to worry about. But it’s important to take the time to deal with stress, and take care of your mind and body. Here’s our top ways to help you de-stress and relax after a long day in the office:

1. Treat yourself to a massage

Treating yourself to a spa day is the perfect way to escape the pressures of daily life and focus on your own wellbeing. Indulge in a visit to a spa and health club, where you can enjoy luxury treatment rooms, spa baths, saunas, steam rooms and a poolside relaxation area – which, as described by The Lab Spa, can provide a ‘refuge from the stresses of daily life.’

According to research, a massage can lower your heart rate and blood pressure, relax your muscles, and increase the production of endorphins, your body's natural "feel good" chemical. Serotonin and dopamine are also released through massage, and the result is a feeling of calm that makes stress much easier to overcome. So treat yourself to a relaxing massage and let all your worries drift away.

2. Leave work at the office

One of the main reasons people find it hard to relax, is because they bring work home with them, both physically and mentally. It’s important to always try and leave work and documents at the office. You should also turn off your emails and cut yourself off from communication until the next morning, so that you get a proper break from work tasks. Mentally leaving work at the office can be slightly more challenging for some people. This means forgetting about the disagreement that you had with your boss earlier that day, or choosing not to think about that looming project deadline next week. Train yourself to do this, and over time you'll find it easier to relax and unwind away from the office.

3. Create a serene space at home

“Your home should be a retreat from the stressors of the outside world.” - Elite Daily

Depending on your living situation, your home may not be an entirely stress-free place. From children screaming at each other, to piles of clothes in the laundry room, it can be difficult to relax when you get home from work. This is why it’s important to create a designated serene space where you can unwind and relax. Create a soothing environment and treat yourself to some little comforts - this could be a warm mug of hot chocolate, your favorite TV program, or some upbeat music. These little pleasures can significantly lift your mood and reduce stress.

4. Unwind with exercise

Exercise releases endorphins, which create feelings of happiness and euphoria. Physical activity has also been shown to increase concentrations of norepinephrine, a chemical that can reduce the brain’s response to stress. Along with the many health benefits, exercise can also serve as a distraction, allowing you to find some quiet time to clear your thoughts and deal with any stress in your life.

Getting outdoors and enjoying nature is another simple way to relieve stress. Going out for a walk is a great way to relax, de-stress, and get some exercise after a long day in the office. You could also join a local hiking or running group, so you can get fit and socialize with like-minded people.

5. Socialize with your loved ones

Some people prefer be alone at home after a long day, and find solitude the ultimate way to relax. For others, there is nothing more diverting than enjoying the company of family and friends. This can really help to reduce stress and improve your mood after a hectic day at work.

"Loved ones can move your attention away from work stresses, offer you empathy and make you laugh.” - Law of Attraction

In today’s society, so full of obligations and daily pressures, it’s necessary to take some time out to relax and unwind. Many of us take our jobs home with us without realizing it, and let our work stresses seep in, instead of making the most of our non-work lives. It can be hard to manage the work-life balance, but it’s important to deal with stress properly and take care of your mind and body. Try some of these tips to help you relax and unwind after a long day in the office.
