A large portion of our time is spent at work or interacting with our coworkers. Because of this, it’s natural to want your office environment to be drama-free and comfortable. However, this mindset can lead to hesitation to speak up for yourself or advocate for your needs, and can lead to being overlooked and underappreciated.

Women at Work: Here's How to Advocate for Yourself in the Office

No matter how hard you try to avoid it, conflict will happen — especially at work. Tricky scenarios like asking for a raise, letting someone go, critiquing your manager, and telling your coworker they’re bothering you are bound to occur. It’s important to go into these scenarios and conversations prepared, ready to listen, and most importantly ready to advocate for yourself.

By rehearsing input ahead of time, doing your research and timing your meeting for a moment that works for all involved, you can help ease the tension of awkward workplace situations and come out feeling positive. Communication is key, and learning how to do so firmly yet with understanding will help make your office life easy.

One of the most important things is balance. When asking for a raise or promotion, balance your request with tangible proof of your contributions to the company. When telling your coworker they’re bothering you, balance it with an understanding statement or compromise. When asking for their help, balance it by saying thank you for their hard work.
